There's an exception to every rule and in the case of, "staying away from people's haggard project cars," this 1995 VR6-swapped VW Cabrio was the exception. After stumbling across a Facebook Marketplace ad, I flew from Columbus, Ohio to Seattle, Washington and bought the car sight-unseen. I completely trusted my intuition on this purchase and bought it because, well, the listing photos were great -- a shocking lack of self-tappers, duct tape, exposed wiring... you get the point.
